Does `epistemic` record support strength, or restate the role?

A decision about meaning, and then the propagation of it through everything downstream.

How it works

epistemic: appears in every claim file and means two things at once. On some claims it records how strongly the evidence supports the proposition. On others it restates the claim's role — a hypothesis marked weak because hypotheses are hypotheses, not because anything about the evidence was measured.

Nothing runs here. There is no script and no output, which is what an open question looks like before anyone has built the machinery to evaluate it.

A direction was ruled on 2026-09-13 (zmainen/elife-claim-trees#20): keep the field, but derive it from an evaluation of the evidence rather than from the paper's own assertion, and give it a better name and an operational definition. That is a direction and not yet a definition, so this stays open — the successor work is zmainen/claim-graphs#21, the warrant question, which is the layer that would compute it.
